‘Let me explain the problem science has with religion.’
The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.
‘You’re a Christian, aren’t you, son?’
’Yes sir,’ the student says.
’So you believe in God’
‘Is God good?’
‘Sure! God’s good.’
‘Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?’
’Are you good or evil?’
‘The Bible says I’m evil.’
The professor grins knowingly.
‘Aha! The Bible!’ He considers for a moment. ‘Here’s one for you. Let’s say there’s a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help him? Would you try?’
‘Yes sir, I would.’
‘So you’re good…!’
‘I wouldn’t say that.’
‘But why not say that? You’d help a sick and maimed person if you could.. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn’t.’
The student does not answer, so the professor continues.
‘He doesn’t, does He? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?’
The student remains silent.
‘No, you can’t, can you?’ the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.
‘Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?’
‘Yes,’ the student says.
‘Is Satan good?’
The student doesn’t hesitate on this one.. ‘No.’
‘Then where does Satan come from?’
The student falters. ‘Satan, was a angel. But God didn’t make him evil, Satan had a choice.’
‘That’s right. But God still made Satan, didn’t He? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?’
‘Evil’s everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything, correct?’
‘So who created evil?’ The professor continued, ‘If God created everything, then God created evil, since evil exists, and according to the principle that our works define who we are, then God is evil.’
Again, the student has no answer.
‘Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?’
The student squirms on his feet. ‘Yes.’
‘So who created them?’
The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question. ‘Who created them?’ There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.
‘Tell me,’ he continues onto another student. ‘Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?’
The student’s voice betrays him and cracks. ‘Yes, professor, I do.’
The old man stops pacing. ‘Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?’
‘In my dreams. But No. Not literally in his human form, or spiritual, for that matter.’
‘Then tell us if you’ve ever heard your Jesus?’
‘I hear him through his word, the bible. I talk to him like how I would talk to my mother or father, and He listens, and replies.’
‘Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus?
‘Yet you still believe in Him?’
‘According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?’
‘Nothing,’ the student replies. ‘I only have my faith.’
‘Yes, faith,’ the professor repeats. ‘And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith.’
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own.
‘Professor, is there such thing as heat?’
The professor nods.
‘And is there such a thing as cold?’
‘Yes, son, there’s cold too.’
‘No sir, there isn’t.’
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain.
‘You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, unlimited heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don’t have anything called “cold”. We can hit up to 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than the lowest -458 degrees… Every body or object is susceptible to study when it has or transmits energy, and heat is what makes a body or matter have or transmit energy. Absolute zero (-458 F) is the total absence of heat. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it.’
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.
‘What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?’
‘Yes,’ the professor replies without hesitation. ‘What is night if it isn’t darkness?’
‘You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light, but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? That’s the meaning we use to define the word. ‘In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?’
The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester.
‘So what point are you making, young man?’
‘Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with, and so your conclusion must also be flawed.’
The professor’s face cannot hide his surprise this time.
‘Flawed? Can you explain how?’
‘You are working on the premise of duality,’ the student explains. ‘You argue that there is life and then
there’s death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite,
something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it. ‘Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?’
‘If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do.’
‘Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?’
The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester, indeed.
‘Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?’
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.
‘To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean.’ The student looks around the room. ‘Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor’s brain?’
The class breaks out into laughter.
‘Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor’s brain, felt the professor’s brain, touched or smelt the professor’s brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir… So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?’
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers.
‘I guess you’ll have to take them on faith.’
‘Now, you accept that there is faith, and, in fact, faith exists with life,’ the student continues. ‘Now, sir, is there such a thing as evil?’
Now uncertain, the professor responds, ‘Of course, there is. We see it everyday It is in the daily example of man’s inhumanity to man. It is in the multitude of crime and violence everywhere in the world. These manifestations are nothing else but evil.’
To this the student replied, ‘Evil does not exist sir, or at least it does not exist unto itself. Evil is simply the absence of God. It is just like darkness and cold, a word that man has created to describe the absence of God. God did not create evil. Evil is the result of what happens when man does not have God’s love, and God in his heart. It’s like the cold that comes when there is no heat or the darkness that comes when there is no light.’
Speechless. The Professor sat down.
honestly i just wanna surround myself with cool magazines , have scissors in hand , construction paper , tape , a glue stick and some music : (
My grandma is sick and can’t control her body. While mentally alert, she is often treated like a child. My grandpa and I were running to the grocery store when suddenly he turned around and drove all the way back home. When I asked him why he said
“I forgot to Kiss your grandma goodbye”.
22 years ago, a 16 year old girl was pregnant with a baby of rape.
Understanding the circumstances, her parents told her to abort or be disowned.
Her best friend - her 18 year old neighbor - although he was not the father, stepped into the father figures shoes. They got married 2 years later.
Mom and Dad, your love for me and for each other GMH.
My first semester of college was terribly lonely.
One night there was a knock on my door, I looked outside and there were roses in the hallway with notes telling me to go down the hall and etc. I followed the instructions.
At the end of the trail was my boyfriend… waiting to take me home for the weekend.
My family has been having financial issues since my mom is a single mother with four children.
I didn’t eat lunch because I didn’t want her to spend money on me even though I played sports after school. My girlfriend noticed this and made me lunch every day for my whole senior year.
Her love GMH.
My grandpa passed away on April 2nd 2009.
Before my grandpa passed he pulled his oxygen mask off his face and lifted his hand up to his mouth. We thought he was going through pain. But instead he blew 3 kisses to my grandma, smiled, and passed away.
RIP Grandpa i love you and You GMH.
I’ve been recovering from years of depression and self-harm.
My boyfriend has been helping me recover every step of the way, by funding my treatment and making sure I’m never alone.
Today I was feeling really down about myself. He tossed me my dictionary and said to look up “beautiful.” He had taped in my picture.
Today, I was walking in a dog park.
I reached this really steep hill, and noticed someone rolling down it, laughing the whole way. At first I passed it off as a just a kid. Then I noticed that it was a woman at least 60 years old, and that her husband was waiting at the bottom of the hill to catch her.
Today in the Walmart parking lot I saw an older couple, not exactly what you would call fit, leaving the store. The woman was carrying a bag and the man leaned over and took it from her.
Thats when I saw him whisper something in her ear.
Suddenly she broke into a run, as did he. She won the race to the truck.
Her prize was a kiss.
I was at the mall the other day when I saw an old couple sitting together. The man looked over at the woman and said,
“Jane, we did it. We grew old together.”
The look in her eyes GMH.
Today, I saw my older brother for the first time in almost five years. Very shocked by his long hair, I asked him if he wanted me to cut it. He freaked out and said that he only needed to grow two more inches before he can have a wig made for his wife of almost 10 years, who’s hair was beginning to fall out because of her cancer. His LGMH.
This morning as I was packing lunch, about to leave for work, my boyfriend danced into the kitchen singing a made up song consisting of only my name over and over. When he saw me, he turned red and said “Oh, you’re still here”. Sneaking a peak in the daily routine of someone who really loves me GMH.
the world is so stupid . promises were meant to be kept not broken , thats why its called a PROMISE . yknow , from the latin word promissum ? a pledge , oath or vow ? “i promise to be with you forever” my butt . if thats a promise , forever mustve been two days .. for REAL . lool . be careful what you say and esp what you promise . just saying .
in this relationship im always the one with the faults . im always the one not putting my share into this . im always the one who forgets to talk to Him . im always the one putting Him off for other people . im always the reckless one who cant controll her emotions . but somehow He sees past all that and continues to make me fall in love with Him even more . He always finds a way to capture my heart . its amazing because He still loves me after all ive done . and He chooses to love me unconditionally .. forever . He’s the one who calms me to the point that i could feel His presence even if i cant see Him . He’s the one who wipes the unknown tears that fall when no ones around . He’s the one that people write countless songs about just saying about how good He is . and to know that He loves me .. that alone leaves me love struck . is it foolish to say ive fallen in love again ? with the same person ? if it is , it doesnt matter anymore . because im in love with my creator .
The Right Way to Live
Key Passage: Colossians 3:1-17
Topic: Christian Living
And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father (Colossians 3:17, NLT).
It’s disappointing to be cut-off in traffic by a guy with a Jesus fish on his tailgate. It’s sad to see the girl from the church worship team at a party with a beer in her hand. And it’s tragic to read about someone who shoots an abortionist “in the name of Jesus.”
It’s one thing to see how a Christian shouldn’t live, but how is a Christian supposed to live?
The Bible tells us that becoming a Christian is really about becoming a new person: “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ…” (Colossians 3:1, NLT). And it’s true. Though our physical bodies stay the same, our spiritual lives are reborn. Because of this, Paul (the author of Colossians) tells us that the first step in living as a Christian is to “set your sights on the realities of heaven… Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth” (Colossians 3:1-2, NLT).
In other words, shift your focus. In a movie, when the camera shifts focus to something in the distance, the close objects become blurred. When a Christian shifts his or her focus to eternity, the worries of life don’t seem as important. Life still matters…but the troubles can now be viewed as temporary and fading.
The next step is to “put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you” (Colossians 3:5, NLT). Paul goes on to explain we’re to “get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other” (Colossians 3:8-9, NLT). And we do this because we’re now representing Christ (See Colossians 3:11, 17). For a lot of people, representing someone else is a new experience. We’re so used to living for ourselves that it takes awhile to realize our actions—good or bad—reflect on another. In the Christian’s case, they reflect on Jesus.
Paul starts us with a negative—“put to death”—but concludes with a positive: “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience” (Colossians 3:12, NLT).
We’re to act this way because these are the characteristics of God. God is merciful and kind and humble and gentle and patient. And so it’s your choice today. As a Christian, what are people going to learn about God when they see you?
Maybe you’re thinking, Love and kindness are all right, but a person has to have a certain amount of ruthlessness to get ahead in the world…right? Read Colossians 3:12-17 and think about the following questions:
What messages about God are you sending to those who see you?
God knows that being a Christian in a sinful world isn’t easy. As you pray, be honest about your frustrations, but also be thankful that your hardships are only temporary. Use your prayer time to refocus your sights on heaven, and ask God for the peace you need to face the day ahead.
im coming back .
my dads making me clean the fort i made dwnstairs , maybe ifi stay down here and christina picks me up , i wont have to claen it up > : )
